Jacqueline Humphries

(b. 1960)

Jacqueline Humphries’s paintings blend reflections on the history of abstract painting with contemporary languages of digital and cinematic screens. Turning emojis, CAPTCHAs, and coding scripts into painted marks, Humphries’s works engage new ways of relating, self-identifying, and looking that emerged as a consequence of contemporary technological developments. Humphries’s first major solo show took place in the mid-2010s amidst a diffusion of internet culture into daily life. By bridging digital and painterly idioms, Humphries’s work attests to the continued relevance of painting in the 21st century.
